MuLab

If you compare MuLab with other music production programs, you will find that it has the same basic functionality to offer, but it is significantly easier to use. The software serves many purposes, from tweaking an existing audio file to make the track sound better to creating new compositions from scratch. It is available as a freeware application, for Mac OS X and Windows.

The software lets you work with multiple audio channels, in which you can record sounds with a microphone or insert audio tracks, predefined effects, instruments and more. What's more, MuLab provides support for MIDI keyboards. If you have one attached to your computer, you can insert new sounds in a separate channel.

All channels are color coded to make them easier to spot. Each channel has a corresponding mixing table in the lower region of the interface, where you can add more effects, instruments and so on. When you add a new effect or other elements, a control panel will show up on the screen, on which you can fine tune the effect or instrument.
